Happy Valentine’s Day! The only reminders of the holiday came
in edible form in a care package for Kayla. Pink frosted Funfetti cupcakes?
Yes, please.
An evening in, eating home cooked food and watching Babies? Yes. Please. Thanks, Laura.

It is so good to be home, to be sleeping in our own beds, and
to have time together as friends before the pandemonium of the semester begins.
(I tried to spell that like “panda”monium to be clever because we’re in China,
but spell check auto-corrected it. Just wanted you to know.)
Last night on our way to eat our first team dinner of the
semester, we had an awesome surprise. David – the first student we ever met! –
was walking toward us on the road. We didn’t expect to see him, and he didn’t
expect to see us. What ensued was the most heartfelt and manly hug I have ever
seen in China. As I watched David and Michael greet each other like brothers I
was filled with a sense of joyful peace. This
is what made me love teaching. I’m excited for the rest of our students to
come back! We asked him if he had eaten, and after responding no and then yes
to our invitation to join us, we all walked together out onto the street in
search of excellent Chinese food (which we found).
In other news, it is
really snowing for the first time since I moved here. It’s been coming down uninterrupted
for about an hour and a half. A blanket of white covers the sidewalks and it is
starting to stick in the trees. Maybe my lovely teammate from Alabama will finally
get to build her snowman! Great day for hot coco and a good book.
